Animal is bold, female-centric horror in the spirit of Promising Young Woman, The Substance, and Raw. Aiming to subvert female archetypes in cinema and genre tropes, Animal stands as a powerful expose to amplify survivor’s voices. With 1 in 4 women experiencing sexual violence in their lives – something that is only being fueled by media rhetoric from the likes of Donald Trump and Andrew Tate – we’re confronting an epidemic of violence against women through a medium long known for its exclusion of women’s voices.

In the wake of Harvey Weinstein and the reassurgence of the MeToo movement, we ask ourselves as creatives: how much has been done to dismantle hierarchical structures in the Film Industry that allows women to have full autonomy over their work?

We’ve long found the way women are depicted on screen to be reductive and tiresome, particularly how our bodies have been fragmented from a male POV for comic relief or romantic fantasy. Even portrayals of sexual violence have only just begun to show sensitivity. Animal pushes this conversation further.

Animal follows 22-year-old Harri on a lonely Friday night where she’s forced to face a harsh reality – she’s been stood up. Just as she’s sinking into her disappointment of a lost connection, she notices the lingering gaze of Robert; a prepossesing stock analyst who unbeknowst to Harri, has been watching her since the moment she walked into the bar.

Harri rather unwittingly turns down a drink from another man double her age just so she can speak to Robert. Their chemistry is immediate, becoming a cocktail of shared bravado and dark humour. Drinks flow, laughter spills and for a moment, it feels like things may go beyond the bar-

As the night wears on, the drinks catch up to Harri and lead to her blacking out, her guard fully down and leaving her in a vulnerable state. Robert, now holding the reins, carries her to a cab, an act that seems caring on the surface… until he quietly gives the driver his address. As the cab disappears into the night, Robert has no idea that he’s just made the worst mistake of his life.
